I Am the World - 1431 Words

I AM THE WORLD Translation by Karlo Antonio G. David My translation of Alejandro Abadilla’s poem â€Å"ako ang daigdig† has proven to be the most popular post in my blog thus far. Many of the search items that led people to the post indicate that an analysis was being sought. This consequently gave me the idea of making an analysis of my own. Here, I will make a close reading of the poem. I will proceed by using English, but will focus on the original Filipino text. Later I shall attempt to translate my analysis to Filipino as a contribution to Filipino Intellectual consciousness. â€Å"Ako ang daigdig† comes in the form of a declaration spoken in the first person, with the persona describing him/herself. Among the descriptions the speaker†¦show more content†¦The third section ends: â€Å"damdamin/larawan/buhay/tula/ako† (â€Å"feeling/image/life/poem/I†), which we can interpret as a movement of reduction and expansion, from feelings to image (solidity of specification), from image to life (which is to say the image becomes representative of life), from life to poem (the structuralist eschewing of the external world’s influence in meaning), ending with the insistent†I,† which we can interpret in two ways: that the poem’s feelings, images and life are all expressed by the poem’s mere being (again, MacLeish); or, continuing that interpretation of the vain poem, the poem’s insistence to mean (and consequently its insistence to declare its being a poem) ruins the feelings, images, life, and wha t little poetry there is in the text (instead of being a piece of expression, of image or a reflection of life, the text betrays its attempt too much that the attempt distracts the reader from the message). If we interpret the poem to be a declaration by the human being as a reader, however, the elements of the poem take on different meanings. Leaders against Followers in Animal Farm by George Orwell

Published in England on August 17th 1945 and written by Eric Arthur Blair (also known as George Orwell) between 1943 and 1944, Animal Farm is a novella that takes place and has the same ideologies of the Russian Revolution on an imaginary farm. Major characters such as Napoleon and Boxer the Horse play important roles concerning freedom and equality. Napoleon, considered by most to be the leader of Animal Farm is manipulative and selfish; does not care about others, and does not like to be bothered when it comes to gaining full control. Boxer the Horse, on the other hand, is the strongest yet most gullible of all the animals. He believes everything Napoleon tells him and never questions whether he is losing his freedom or not. This novella argues how a farm, just like a country, can transform for the worst with leaders who do not know how to govern it. Just like Karl Marx once said â€Å"The ruling ideas of each age have ever been the ideas of its ruling class.† Like any other leader in the world, Napoleon does not differ. Not all leaders are dictators and not all dictators are leaders. Napoleon, due to his manipulative behavior gains hatred from a lot of people around him who cannot say anything to him due to their fright. By constantly changing the commandments, he creates a tension within Animal Farm making the animals believe that everything he does is done in the right way. I want to be a physician that leads by example and the most valuable way to do that is delivering the best quality care that I can to my patients. To do this will be a challenge in a difficult to navigate and changing healthcare system, but I hope to learn from my own experiences, exposure, and position myself with the best possible support to succeed. After reading Clayton Christiansen’s article â€Å"How Will You Measure Your Life?† I began to think of ways that I could go about doing that. I think that it is important to not only think about about how things go at work, but how you are as a person. I would hope that the people I care about view me as someone they can count on, someone they know will do the right thing, and someone that they have seen do the right thing. One of the key things that Christiansen touches on in his article is the allocation of resources. You cannot do everything, but you should try a have a large impact on the right things. I will make sure to create a balance in my life, both home and professional. I will need to focus on both and be prepared the sometimes the gains may not be immediate in either aspect, but by putting time and work in I will be more motivated and happy at both. Night â€Å"Today everything is possible, even the crematoria. (Night, Wiesel 59) This compound hyperbole describes Elie Wiesel memoir of all the treacherous events that took place during the holocaust. Elie witnessed the whole experience first-hand. Although all Jews felt that God was either no longer there or simply did not exist, this quote was used as a hyperbole to make a seemingly inferior race feel the heat of a religious upheaval. â€Å"Never shall I forget that first night in camp, which has turned my night into one long night seven times sealed. † (Wiesel 32) By using hyperbole, this excerpt lets Wiesel express this symbolic complex sentence to exaggerate the agonizing feeling of the holocaust being one long and dark quandary. â€Å"Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my god and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. (Wiesel 32) By giving the personification that his dreams were turned to dust helps us as readers understand the full extent of the gruesome nature that had changed the lives of millions forever. This book is a perfect example of Man’s inhumanity to man. Babies were shot and burned right in front of Elie. This could be like someone kicking a puppy in front of you and knowing you can’t do anything to stop it. The book title Night helps us as readers understand the dark, outstretched gloomy nature of the holocaust, and the symbolic side of the emotion being felt during war. The holocaust was full of remorseful and dark memories like the night sky is black. Elie’s book titled Night truly shows how terrifying this war was. â€Å"Over there, that’s where you’re going to be taken. That’s you’re grave. Over there. † (Wiesel 38) This literal compound sentence was an excerpt from the book. Its literal effect on readers helped us understand that the thought of death could not be escaped. There was no place the Jews could go, and nothing Jews could do to escape the horrific thought of a horrifying death. Whether this be starvation, a bullet to the chest, or the rematorium, the thought of death haunted them all. What was described as one of the scariest things happening during this time were men turning on family members. Between killing for a piece of bread and abandoning parents or children for being weak, the holocaust had men acting not as men, but as wild animals. Also on the literal side the excerpt â€Å"Never sha ll I forget that smoke. † (Wiesel, 32) The smoke that represented where he could have died, and the smoke that turned innocent infant children into nothing more than a diminishing pile of ash. During the holocaust men were not treated as such. To the eyes of German SS soldiers Jews were merely dirt. Wiesel’s symbolic side of the book was shown through personification, hyperbole, syntax and a variety of various sentence structures such as using ways to describe how dark and gloomy his â€Å"long nights† stay at camp was. The title also brought out the more literal side like the smoke he swore never to forget. Underline the question word and think about what it means: ‘Where’ means ‘a place’; ‘How’ means ‘in what way’, and ‘Why’ means look for a reason or cause. Underline other important words in the question – nouns and verbs provide information that you might need to find in the text. Try to match the words in the question with the correct point in the text. (This is called ‘scanning’). When you locate the sentence, read it more carefully to find the exact answer. If you can’t match any words, remember, the word in the question might be a synonym of the word in the text. If you still can’t locate the right answer, read up or down from the sentence you found, or guess! Don’t write full sentences in your answer. Keep your answers short – a date or number or a few words will be enough to get a mark. Too much writing can waste your time, and, if you give too much information, you might include wrong details which could mean you lose a mark. You can copy the words from the text – you don’t need to use your own words. If you write in your own words, you won’t lose a mark as long as you include all the correct information needed in the question. Look out for and learn the meaning of signpost phrases such as ‘apart from’, or ‘rather than’, or ‘According to the graph’, and make sure you understand what they refer to. Remember! The questions follow the order of the text in Exercises 1 and 2. The only exception to this is in Paper 2 – Extended Level – in Exercise 2 you need to look back at the whole text to find answers to the last question. Handwriting is important too, because you often have to write names, addresses, or other Proper Nouns. Even so, the price is worth it if you want to have some fun. Less expensive aircraft guns are not as accurate as their more expensive counterparts, but you can still have loads of fun with them as well.
